Hanuman Jayanti is commemorated as the birth of Lord Hanuman. Hanuman Jayanti 2017 is epitomized on 11th of April. Lord Hanuman, the 11th incarnation of Lord Shiva, is also known as Bajrang Bali, PavanPutra, AnjanaPutra, etc. According to the Hindu Lunar Calendar, it is celebrated on the 15th day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Chaitra. That’s why it is also known as Chaitra Purnima . On this day, devotees observe fast and worship Lord Hanuman.

We have seen Lord Hanuman immersed in vermillion in most of the temples. There’s an interesting story behind this. Once, Sita Maa was applying sindoor on her forehead. Lord Hanuman asked her such act out of curiosity. Sita Maa replied that it is for increasing the life of Lord Ram . As a result, Bajrang Bali smeared himself in sindoor (vermilion). That’s why, Lord Hanuman is meant to be the greatest devotee of Lord Rama.

Legends behind Hanuman Jayanti

Before celebrating this festival , it is important to know it’s history and significance. As per the Legend, once Saint Angira went to meet Lord Indra. Lord Indra in his pride, organized a performance by a damsel named Punjikasthala. But Saint Angira had no interest in that act and started meditating. When the act come to an end, Lord Indra asked him about the performance. Saint Angira replied that he has no interest in such dances, so he was in deep cogitation. After hearing this, the damsel started to dismay Saint Angira.

Thus, Saint Angira got infuriated and cursed her that she will take rebirth on Earth as a female monkey. On this, apsara realized her mistake and apologized to Saint. Saint Angira said that he can’t take the curse back, but she will gave birth to a son who would be the greatest devotee of Paramatma. Thereafter, Punjikasthala took birth as Anjana, a Vanara princess and got married to King Kesari. In order to have a son, she worshipped Lord Shiva continuously for 12 years. She, then gave birth to Lord Hanuman. This day is celebrated by the people with great zeal and gusto as ‘Hanuman Jayanti’.

Hanuman Puja Vidhi

Here are the points which have to be followed while observing the day of Hanuman Jayanti:

  • Devotees observing fast on this day have to bathe early in the morning. (Mostly mail devotees observe a fast on this day). This fast lasts for 24 hours.
  • Clean the puja Sthan and establish an idol or picture of Lord Hanuman on a chowki.
  • Now, the idol is offered with vermilion (sindoor), sweets and flowers.
  • Chant the Hanuman chalisa and Lord Hanuman Mantra for 108 times.

Devotees can also visit the nearest Sankat Mochan temple. Various Lord Rama and Hanuman Mantras can be enchanted.

Astrological Significance

Astrologically, it is believed that person suffering from SadeSati period must worship Lord Hanuman. This will soon reduce the bad effects of planet Saturn from his horoscope. He will lead a blissful and trouble free life. Let’s know, why is it believed!

Ravana with his hard penance, achieved boon from Lord Shiva and Brahma. That’s why he wanted the same for his unborn child. So, when Meghnad’s birth time was approaching, Ravana kidnapped all the 9 planets. He positioned all the 9 planets in the 11th position so that his newborn child could be unbeatable and eternal. This lead to the locking up of all the planets including Planet Saturn i.e. Lord Shani.

Lord Hanuman was searching for Mother Sita in Lanka after being abducted by Ravana. He saw planets and rescued them all including Shani Dev. When he did so, as a gesture of gratitude, Lord Shani granted him a boon that Lord Hanuman and his devotees would never face Shani’s inauspiciousness.

Celebrations of Hanuman Jayanti

In India, Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated with great enthusiasm. Let’s see when and how is it celebrated in different parts of India -

  1. In Maharashtra , it is celebrated on the 14th day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Chaitra, i.e. a day prior to the actual date. People observe fast which comes to an end after 24 hours.
  2. In other parts of Northern India , it is celebrated on the 15th day of Shukla Paksha in the Hindu month of Chaitra.
  3. In Kerala and Tamil Nadu , it is celebrated in the month of Margazhi. As per Gregorian calendar, it is celebrated during the months of December - January.
  4. In Karnataka, Telangana and Karnataka , it is celebrated in the month of Vaishakha. In these parts of India, it is a 41 days carnival.
