But, as per the South Indian lunar calendar i.e Amavasyant calendar, the Varuthini Ekadashi occurs in the Hindu month, Chaitra.

Varuthini Ekadashi : Legends

There was a King named Mandhata. He was a generous and religious king. He was married to Yadav Naresh Shah Bindu's daughter Bindumati. He had 3 sons and 50 daughters with her.

One day, King Mandhata was meditating in jungle and suddenly, a wild bear came and chewed his leg. After that, the bear dragged the King in the woods. The King did not break the rule of meditation. Mandhata started praying to Lord Vishnu for help. Lord Vishnu appeared as a rescuer for him.

Lord Vishnu killed the wild bear with his Chakra. King was very upset as the bear ate his leg. Lord Vishnu advised King Mandhata to go to Mathura and observe the Varuthini Ekadashi Vrat. The king observed all the Varuthini Ekadashi Vrat and prayed to Lord Vishnu's twelve Avatars.

With the result of this Vrat, he got back his leg and became free from all earthly diseases. By observing Varuthini Ekadashi Vrat, people in grief attain happiness and become free from all health related issues.
