Legends Behind Guru Purnima

The Birth of Veda Vyasa

Born as Krishna Dwaipayana, Veda Vyasa took birth on the Purnima of Ashadha. His contribution to the vedic society is unparalleled. During the later parts of his life, he edited and segmented the sacred Vedas into four. It is also believed that he concluded his work on Vedas on the day of Guru Purnima.

Veda Vyasa was the author of the legendary Mahabharat and the Srimad Bhagavatam. He is also considered as the Guru of Dattatreya. Due to his indispensable contribution to the literary field, he is also regarded to be the greatest teacher to have ever taken birth. And this is why, his birthday is also celebrated as Guru Purnima.

Gautama Buddha, who was born as Siddhartha Gautama, threw away the lush life that was at his disposal as he was not inclined towards the pleasures of the mundane world. It is believed that when he delivered his first speech at Sarnath, it was the day of Guru Purnima.

  5. Disciples also observe fast, and abstain from meat, alcohol, etc.

Sri Guru Mantra is recited to pay homage to the teachers, who have always been the guiding light in our life. The mantra, along with its meaning is given below:

Dhyaana moolam guror murtih;
Pooja moolam guror padam;
Mantra moolam guror vakyam;
Moksha moolam guror kripa

Meaning of the Mantra:

The Guru must be held in high respect, and the feet of the Guru should be worshipped. The words of the Guru must be adhered to as sacred Mantras. By the mercy of Gurus that Moksha can be attained.

Celebration of Guru Purnima

On this day, people sing praises to their Gurus for the efforts that they put in shaping the future of their pupils. People worship their mentors and teachers, and pay them the respect they deserve. In schools, students immerse themselves in making cards, and arranging events to appease their teachers, and make them realise how important they are for their students. Guru Purnima also marks the beginning of the rainy season. More often than not, it is associated as a festival that puts an end to the relentless heat and acts as a signal, as if to let everyone know that there would be some respite from this inescapable heat.
